Book Review: Gone

To kick off my new and improved blog I'll review one of my favorites. 'Gone' by Michael Grant is an engrossing young adult novel that kicks off a wonderful six book series (the last one comes out in April. Squee!). It takes place in a small coastal town in California, where suddenly everyone over fifteen disappears. The kids are left trying to figure out what's going on, and where everyone went. It doesn't take too long for them to find the large dome encasing their town and some land near it. Also, some kids are developing strange powers, just to make it even more fun.
Enter Sam Temple, who is known for nothing other than a simple act of heroics in seventh grade. However, he groups the children, and becomes the improptou leader of the three hundred or so kids left. When an enemy emerges with some powerful followers, and they find out just what happens when you reach your fifteenth birthday, it picks up. Although the writing is weak at times, the plot always makes sense, the characters are well developed, and there's a whole host of exciting sequels that are even better. (Oh come on, who doesn't like a series?) There is some romance, a titch of mystery, and a whole lot of action.
Recommended to anyone who likes action. One of the best in the YA section. Ages 10+
